Cumbre Vieja

It would be remiss if one did not mention the potential of a mega tsunami possibly occurring on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States due to Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands. Scientists and scholars agree and disagree on the potential magnitude and effects, however, the basic thesis is agreed that the potential does exist, and many are quite unaware of it. Cumbre Vieja (Spanish: Old Summit) is an active volcanic ridge on the volcanic ocean island of Isla de La Palma in the Canary Islands. During the 1949 eruption, three vents - Duraznero, San Juan and Hoyo Negro opened and lava was erupted. a fracture approximately two and half kilometres long - about 1/10th of the exposed length of the Cumbre Vieja, opened and parts of the western half of the Cumbre Vieja ridge moved about 1m sideways and 2m downwards towards the Atlantic Ocean. It is this fracture that has the potential to be catastrophically pushed into the Atlantic Ocean during the next eruption. The resulting effects of a land mass being pushed into the ocean would send a tsunami wave rippling outward from the island. Cities along the entire North American eastern seaboard would be affected by waves 100 ft. to almost 200 ft high traveling in excess of 100 mph.Tens of millions would be killed as Boston, New York, Miami, and many other cities that are located near the Atlantic coast are leveled. The need for early warning tsunami buoys in the Atalntic Ocean is greatly needed and The U.S. Government needs to act quickly to get these buoys in place. Even with an early warning, Most American residents of the East Coast would have less than 6 hours to evacuate.
